Sitar School of Toronto and Shibbirs with Ustad Shahid Parvez by Anwar Khurshid
Over the last five years Sitar School has organized traditional music camps called Shibbirs. The first time ever that I heard about a Shibbir was in 1999. Kelly Johnson visited India and attended a Shibbir. He described the atmosphere, the love, the wonderful lessons, the brotherhood and camaraderie very passionately. It immediately became a dream to attend a Shibbir. I talked to ustadji about arranging a Shibbir. It took us two years before ustadji felt that we were ready to have a Shibbir. Our first Shibbir was in Muskowka at a cottage.

The Sitar School of
Toronto is dedicated to producing sitar players of high calibre and provides the
best quality instruction in Indian Classical Music.
Ustad Shahid Parvez,
lovingly known as Ustadji, is our guru.
He hails from the famous lineage of the Etawah tradition and conducts
intensive workshops at SSOT three times a year. In Ustadji's absence, his senior student
Anwar Khurshid nurtures the students, providing
traditional instructions and helping them to develop a passion for
music. The atmosphere of the school is
that of a big family and great friendships are formed as students
progress together and help each other to grow.
We also have very traditional
music camps called Shibbirs. Students
live in with the guru and experience music in it’s depth.

Ustad Shahid Parvez hails from the famous lineage of the Etawah tradition. He was initiated into music by his father, Ustad Aziz Khan and very soon made a name for himself as a young performer. As a matter of fact, he gave his first public sitar recital at the age of eight.
Ustad Shahid Parvez received training in vocal music and tabla as well as the sitar and quickly established himself as a major attraction on the Indian Classical concert circuit.
Today Ustad Shahid Parvez is acknowledged by stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan as one of the finest sitar players alive and the torch bearer for the current generation. His playing is a perfect combination of gaiyaki ang (singing style) and tantrakari ang (instrumental style). He has performed to sold out concert halls and music festivals all around the world.
Ustad Shahid Parvez teaches workshops regularly at the Sitar School of Toronto. Since the inception of the Sitar School , Ustad Shahid Parvez has returned at least three times a year. Our aim is to provide a passionate, keen and dedicated pool of students to Ustad Shahid Parvez, so that he finds teaching as much a joy as we find learning.
The sessions are intense and the training is hands on. Ustad Shahid Parvez pays meticulous attention to each of his students and riyaz (practice) is given utmost importance.
