The Sitar School of Toronto
At Sitar school we teach traditional music. We assist students with time tested methods of learning, combined with the internet resources, to gain proficiency in the art of playing and improvisation. A body of musical ideas has to be presented and absorbed and there is no short cut.
Our main focus is on teaching Sitar. We follow the Imdad Khani gharana i.e. style and school of musical thought. This gharana has produced some of the best instrumental musicians in India for centuries. Presently the gharana is flourishing with its eighth generation.
Our mission: Appreciation, playing, and understanding of Classical Indian Music in North America. We believe that just as Western Music is thriving in Japan and China, so too can ICM in North America. We aim to provide an institutional framework for this.
To this end we conduct courses in music appreciation, teach both new and advanced students, organize workshops and concerts. We provide students with instruments for lessons and workshops. The lessons are conducted in a very friendly and loving atmosphere. We believe in good values, friendship, love and practice. We believe that learning music is a part of life. Sitar school is not just a school; it is a family.
We believe that music is a greater wealth than money. We want to make a difference in this world.
The Sitar School of Toronto is striving to be one of the best institutions in North America for Indian Classical Music. The students of Sitar School are its greatest asset. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students. Each student brings something uniquely enriching to Sitar School.
